Is airport drop-off free for Blue Badge holders?

Sometimes — and almost never automatically. Across the 29 UK airports we track, Blue Badge arrangements fall into four camps: a genuine exemption you must register for in advance (Heathrow, Gatwick, London City); free time in a different car park while the drop-off zone itself still charges (the most common model — Glasgow, Aberdeen, East Midlands, Belfast International and others); a longer window or reduced rate rather than a waiver (Stansted extends its maximum stay but keeps the £10 charge; Bournemouth lets badge holders stay 4 hours for the 30-minute rate); and airports whose pages publish nothing at all. The one near-universal rule: displaying the badge on the dashboard does nothing by itself at the big airports — the ANPR cameras can't see it.

Every row restates what the airport's own pages say, checked 25 Aug 2026. Where a row says "not published", that is itself the finding — the airport states no concession on its drop-off pages.

The registration trap

The three London airports with real exemptions all make you earn them ahead of time. London Heathrow wants the application at least 7 days before you travel, and the discount then works in any vehicle carrying the badge holder — including taxis. London City takes up to 5 working days to approve photos of both sides of the badge, and even then you must log each visit yourself unless you set up AutoPay. London Gatwick routes registration through its parking operator, Times24. Turn up unregistered at any of the three and you pay the normal charge — pay it, don't skip it: an unpaid visit becomes a Parking Charge Notice, and "I'm a badge holder" is not a defence the camera hears.

Three things badge holders get caught by

First, the exemption is usually somewhere else: at Luton, Aberdeen and East Midlands the drop-off lanes themselves give badge holders nothing — the free window lives in a named car park (Terminal Car Park 1, the Short Stay, Short Stay 1), so going to the obvious place costs the ordinary fee. Second, validation is manual at several airports: Belfast International wants the help button pressed at the barrier, Belfast City wants the ticket taken to the Assistance Office, Liverpool refunds by email afterwards — none of it happens on its own. Third, drop-off and pick-up can differ: Manchester's forecourt is free for badge holders dropping off, but not for collections.
