Airport pick-up charges: what collecting someone costs

The general rule: pick-up costs the same as drop-off

At most UK airports one barrier or camera-controlled area serves both jobs, at one tariff — collect someone and you pay exactly what a drop-off pays, from £1 at City of Derry up to £10. The drop-off price index therefore doubles as the pick-up price list. But the biggest airports run pick-up differently, and getting it wrong is expensive.

Five airports where pick-up works differently

Manchester is the one that bites: attempting to collect in a Drop Off zone brings a £100 charge. Official pick-up is in the multi-storeys — £6.60 for 15 minutes at Multi Storey T2 West.

London Heathrow doesn't allow pick-ups or waiting in its drop-off zones at all, and unattended vehicles can be towed — collect from the Terminal car parks or Park & Ride.

London Stansted's Express Set Down is signed drop-off only. The free pick-up option is the Mid Stay car park: 60 minutes free, then £5 for the second hour — but re-entering within an hour costs £48.

East Midlands's Rapid Drop Off is also drop-off only — pick-ups use Short Stay 1 at £6 for up to 30 minutes.

London Gatwick puts its express pick-up areas inside the Short Stay car parks — Car Park 6 (Level 4) at North Terminal, Car Park 3 at South — at normal Short Stay rates, and you must stay with the car.

Free places to wait for a delayed flight

Never circle the approach roads — several airports enforce red routes with £100 charges. Instead, most airports keep a free waiting spot: Newcastle's Callerton Parkway gives 90 minutes free beside the Metro with a shuttle from 3am; London Gatwick and London Luton give 2 free hours in the Long Stay; Glasgow gives an hour; Bristol's Waiting Zone gives an hour with toilets on site; London Stansted's Mid Stay gives an hour for pick-up or drop-off. Why collecting costs more than dropping off in practice

The tariffs may match, but the risk doesn't. Dropping off, you control the clock; collecting, the airline does. A bag on the wrong carousel or a queue at the gate turns a 10-minute stop into 25 — and the tiers are built for exactly that: London Gatwick adds £1 per minute after its first 10, Manchester's official pick-up jumps to a £60 overstay charge past its 15 minutes, and London Stansted's £10 becomes £28 at minute 16. The arithmetic is simple: for drop-offs, buy the shortest window; for pick-ups, don't enter the paid zone until your passenger is kerbside-ready, and do the waiting somewhere free. That's the whole trick, and it's why the free waiting zones above matter more than the headline fees.

Barrier airports vs camera airports when you're collecting

How you pay changes how a collection can go wrong. At the 16 pay-before-you-leave airports — Aberdeen, Belfast City, Belfast International, Bournemouth and City of Derry and the rest of the barrier crowd — a long wait costs money but can't cost a fine: the machine simply charges the higher tier. At the 9 ANPR post-pay airports (Birmingham, East Midlands, London City, London Gatwick and London Heathrow among them) the danger inverts: the visit feels free because nothing is paid on site, and a Parking Charge Notice of £80–£100 arrives only if you forget the deadline afterwards.
